e.g. I am an astronaut.

Using simple present tense to express simple truth

e.g. An astronaut flies a spacecraft.

Asking ‘Wh-‘ questions to find out a person's occupation

e.g. What job do you do?

Asking ‘Wh-‘ questions to find out the reason

e.g. Why?

Asking simple questions to obtain ‘yes/no’ responses

e.g. Do you like your job?

Pre-task preparation

Introduce the new vocabulary for jobs, e.g. astronaut, pilot, shop assistant, etc. Help students build up a spidergram about jobs. First, prompt them to think of different places, then the people they can see there, e.g. a restaurant--cooks, waiters; a hospital -- doctors, nurses, etc.

While-task procedure

1 Divide the students into groups of six. Distribute a copy of Photocopiable page 28 to each group. Ask the students to cut along the dotted lines to make role-play cards.

2 Mix the cards. Ask each student to draw two cards. Students take turns to find out the job and other personal information of each group member. Ask them to use the modelled dialogues in Play a game.

3 Invite individual students to report back about what jobs their group members do, whether they like their jobs or not, and some other relevant information.

Post-task activity

Play a guessing game: What job do you do?

Play a game with the students. Say: I grow food. What job do I do? to elicit: You're a farmer. Say: Now it's your turn. Volunteers continue the game. Encourage students to think of other jobs they have learnt before.
